Unit: 6

My target Audience: My target is audience is all the adults that play games on mobiles, tablets and iPod’s. I have targeted adults because the video game I plan to make contains a lot of violence, vandalism and discrimination. For example Image 1 is screenshot of my 3D models showing one of the weapons created for my video game.   The age I mainly aim for is 40 and below as the most average age to playing violent action games is males in there 30’s. I do aim to keep both genders interested though which is why I’ve planned to use an emotional sad story for the video games story to try attract the interest females to the video game to keeping all the players hooked into the video game.

To keep my target audience interested into my video game I’m planning to keep a variety of weapons to give the player many different options to what they want to use on a level and how they want to complete it. They get to choose on how the level will be complete as I want there to be a mixture of genre in the video game so players can repeat the levels in different ways so it ends up as a long lasting video game.  Below is an example of the variety of weapons the player will be able to select from image 1 to 4.

Research.

gender.png

To begin my research I created a survey for many people to complete and the first question shows male was the most interested in video gaming out of 30 people. I think from my content in my game I will attract more males then females even though I am going to try to attract both genders towards my video game.

age.png

I attracted the age of 16-17 the most in my survey so I might consider dropping my target audience to 16-40 instead of 18-40 due to this. To do this I would have to change a lot of the content in my video game, which would completely change the story I have planned for this video game.

research.png

Here is what I found on further research on age and gender, which is another reason on why I chose the target audience on the age of 18-40.

Genre.png

I wanted to mix a few genres together to keep my video game entertaining and interesting to the player. I was originally planning to use the genres of third person shooter with tactical and strategy together, but from my research it shows that open world is more popular then third person games. Due to this, I am now going to change my plan from making my game from just levels to more of an open world game to keep my target audience happy and attracted. Even though first person shooter is displayed the most popular through my research, I decided not to use it, as I believe it gives the game a few limitations like character customization, as the player cannot see their character in the gameplay of the video game.

key-mechanic.png

I was planning to focus on the story, as I wanted to hook the players in to the video game in with an intense emotional story and from my research; it proves that most players believe the story to the video game is key on building a good video game. Therefore, I am going to stick towards my plan and build this intense emotional story.

game-y.png

Here are some of the responses to one of my questions. The most often answers were to do with the open world experience as it gives the player more freedom and choices, and the storyline as it helps to hook player to the video game. This gives me even more reason to aim to build my game with an open world and a good intense story.

gd-character.png

Most people responded to this question with the answer of fact they would like to see a character that’s different and changes through the story as it makes it difficult to predict things in the story keeping the story more enjoyable.  For example, in this video game “The last of us”, it gained many awards and success for having an amazing story due to the fact of having fantastic characters in the video game, which is what, inspired me to create an emotional intense story.

last.pngHere is the evidence that the last of us won awards from the source of Wikipedia and I have read reviews that say that the story in this video game is one of the most memorable story’s ever, which is what makes me so keen to succeed in making a story/narrative close to one like this.

choices.png

Nearly every response was answered with yes so I definitely need to give the player multiple choices to keep my target audience hooked into my video game.

realistic.png

I was aiming to make my video game realistic so that my story will go with the gameplay, so I’m quite pleased that in the responses the answer was mainly yes to this question.

hooks.png

Many different answers were brought to this question but the one’s I noticed the most was competitiveness and replay able content, because I’ve mainly focused on making the video game replay able, but I haven’t really thought about what I could do to make it multiplayer and maybe somehow making it competitive in the multiplayer. I am sure this will add many players to the videogame if multiplayer is added.

Task 2

I am going to be analysing a video game produced by Ubisoft in 2015 called Rainbow six siege. This video game is a first person shooter tactical video game, so I believe this video games main target audience is males from the age of 18 and above as it aims to have a realistic agency sort of theme with operators from many nations against terrorism.

rb1.png

To go along with their theme of terrorism and agency vs each other, Rainbow six siege keep the colours in their menus in dark colours to go along with the theme and style of agency is with simple colours of black and grey smoke, to display real situations in this sort of combat in real life. They do this to display keep their aim towards realism in this game.

Up above is a link to a YouTube video which fully explains rainbow six sieges sound and how it’s completely different to most of first person shooting game’s. They changed the sound system into a much more detailed system, which is aimed to be more realistic as they have made it so sound no longer travels through walls but around  walls and through open areas instead. This really effects gameplay to help with realistic feeling and look to the game.

Graphics

As Ubisoft  are aiming for realism all the graphics are created in photorealistic graphics with the shades and lighting effects like sunlight and through the months of this video game being out the developers have made updates and improvements on the brightness and shades for the players. In the HUD of the screen, the player is given key information that an operator would require like the location there in the compass and ammo capacity.

rb3.png

As Ubisoft are aiming for the target audience of someone who wants a tactical realistic military experience of a game they added the ability to use the environment as much as possible, For example in  the photo above shows gameplay of the video game with the wall being destroyed crating a hole to effect the combat in the game. They created this ability in the video game as it makes the video more realistic and more tactical giving the players more options in the video game.

rb4.png

To help keep the players interested in playing this for a long duration Ubisoft have given a long variety on operators/characters for the players to select from, which all have their own gadgets to themselves with their own agency to their nation with different classes of weapons for them to select from. And to stop the players from getting bored through time they keep updating the game with more and new operators and maps for the players to enjoy with patch’s nerves and buffs to improve the video game to make any changes that need to be made to get everything just right.

Ubisoft Montreal developed and published rainbow six siege 1st December and it comes from an old rainbow six franchise with twelve other games to do with rainbow six. The very first rainbow six was produced August 21, 1998 and it was not created by Ubisoft.  It was created and published by red storm.

Ubisoft Advertised rainbow six siege through trailers on the internet for example YouTube was a key area for their target audience as many people in their target audience visit YouTube.

rb5.png

To continue the growth and advertisement of this video game Ubisoft created an international video pc gaming tournament which then got linked into social media and passed along with reviews from player’s magazines and gaming companies.

rb6.png

To continue earning money from this video Ubisoft created a store and a currency system for the players to buy extra content like weapon skins and charms for customization for their weapons which they can buy credits and then spend them credits on whatever content they want. There’s many things players can buy like new costumes’ headgear ‘charms and weapon skins to try encourage players to spend money they create bundle deals to give the payers some good deals.

rb7.png

Ubisoft was aiming for a competitive game and to boost that in the video game there is a rank system that gives the players something to fight and aim for in the game and also helps the players have a balance level on versing players on their level of skill.

Part B

Rainbow six siege is focused on a audience enjoy strategy and tactical things involved in a first person shooting game with a feel life experience. For example below is a paragraph from a review about why Ubisoft do not want to add more game modes to rainbow six siege.

rb8.png

http://www.pcgamer.com/why-rainbow-six-siege-wont-have-new-game-modes-aims-for-50-100-operators-instead/

The director explains that the construction of the video game is the main rules of a real life siege (Attack Vs defence with one life) which shows they aimed for an audience that realistic games with tactical and strategy involved. It also says there always looking to prototype, like characters to keep things realistic which supports there target audience.

It’s obvious due to the fact of the realism and new abilities in rainbow six siege that they wasn’t aiming for quite the same audience as other first person shooters out there like call of duty and battlefield. They wanted to bring something new and different, which is why they added the new lean ability to the game yet again making it more realistic. This helps the player aim more accurately and defend themselves better as they go round corners.

In their target audience I think Ubisoft where aiming for people that want to use there video game as escapism from reality to experience something not everyone would experience every day, For example like a real life threatening siege.  This would explain why Ubisoft created rainbow six siege to be so realistic, so that there video game can take the player from reality into something filled with adrenaline and action which is what a lot of gamers want to experience in today’s society

Ubisoft used three of the four game type, audience theories towards their target audience that are achievers, socialisers and killers but from my opinion in analysing and playing rainbow six siege myself I don’t believe it targets explorers as each round of the video game has low time limit.

  • Achievers: I believe ubisoft targeted this part of gamers as they have and competitive online ranked mode for these players to try reaching the best rank and becoming the best with a clearance level by the side, which displays how much you have played the video game. These players would be hooked to this system wanting to reach the diamond rank trying to achieve on reaching the best rank.

rb9.png

  • Socialisers: Ubisoft have used the strategy and tactical side to their video game to their advantage, by creating the need to communicate in the video game to succeed working as a team. This helps target all the gamers that like the social part of gaming as people get to know each other quickly, gaining friends quickly so the players can build a team quickly but the socialisers will like this as it makes the social part of gaming a lot more than most first person shooting games. Here is a picture of a match making screen as it shows a full team with headsets talking together getting ready to work together to win the match.

rb10.png

  • Killers: the main part of Ubisofts target audience the competitive type who want action and want to win. These guys are the players that always want to be the best and to win competitions so with the ranked system like the achiever’s there going to want to not only reach the diamond rank but are going to want to stay there to. Rainbow six siege s all about competitive combat between players not only gun fire accuracy but also map knowledge and strategy which is why this would pull all these players into this video game

All together Ubisfot used the realistic effect because nearly every gamer likes to play video games to escape reality, to keep themselves occupied and escape from anything in reality. With this realistic effect the players can feel there in another world situation that is enjoyable and what makes a game successful.
